Greece

Greece, one of the richest in biodiversity countries in EU, hosts a significant variety of ecosystems ranging from thermo- to oro-Mediterranean ecosystems, Mediterranean island ecosystems to temperate ecosystems. The landscape is formulated through human activity since the antiquity, thus including pristine, natural, semi-natural and anthropogenic ecosystems - cultural landscapes.

Greece

These Greek ecosystems face several challenges, from land abandonment at the mountainous grazing areas and grasslands, to severe mega-fires and climate change impact. Additionally, the island and coastal ecosystems face the immediate threat of over-tourism that leads to rapid land use change or land use modification (e.g. from traditional to intensive exploitation).

The WEED project will provide the scientific tools needed to map and monitor Greek ecosystems, focusing on their unique characteristics, to document and monitor changes in a timely and cost-effective way, for the first time.

The WEED tools will not only act as a robust and valid monitoring scheme, but will directly support decision making and the national policy agenda drafting on the environment, climate change and nature restoration.
