Since 2008, the Sino-German workshops have been a key platform for cooperation between the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) and the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences (CRAES).
This year’s workshop focuses on effective and integrated monitoring of biodiversity and climate, with an emphasis on environmental and Earth observation techniques. Experts will present the latest approaches, including applications of artificial intelligence, and underline the value of involving diverse stakeholders in biodiversity and climate monitoring.
Participants will also discuss challenges in data compilation and reporting within international frameworks such as the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM-GBF) and the Paris Agreement. The workshop brings together experts from China, Germany, and Europe to explore synergies for integrated biodiversity and climate monitoring and reporting.
On Wednesday, 3 December, Ian McCallum from the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) will deliver an invited talk titled “Biodiversity Monitoring in Europe: User and Policy Needs.” He will present results from the successfully completed EuropaBON project along with the current ESA World Ecosystem Extent Dynamics project, connecting these with international initiatives that support multiple policy frameworks, including KM-GBF, the Paris Agreement, the CBD Global Biodiversity Framework, SEEA Ecosystem Accounting, the Ramsar Convention, and the SDGs.
